How to Reduce RTO: Practical Steps for Flipkart and Meesho Sellers
Published
RTO (return to origin) is a parcel that was never delivered and comes back to you. The buyer refused it at the door, could not be reached, or the address was wrong. You lose the sale, your packing material and days of time, and the stock sits on the road instead of on your shelf. You cannot stop every RTO, but most sellers can bring it down. Here are practical steps that work for Flipkart and Meesho sellers, and for Amazon Easy Ship and Self Ship orders too.
First, know the difference between RTO and a customer return
- A customer return was delivered, then sent back by the buyer.
- An RTO was never delivered.
- Marketplaces treat them differently. On Meesho, the seller is not charged an extra shipping fee for an RTO, while a customer return has a return shipping fee based on weight. On Flipkart, check your payment report for how each return is marked and charged. See RTO vs Customer Return and Flipkart Payment Reports.
- The causes are different too. RTO is mostly about the buyer at the door: cash on delivery, address and delay. Customer returns are mostly about the product. If you mix them up, you fix the wrong thing.
1. Measure your RTO by product, state and payment type
- Don't work from a feeling. Count RTO separately from returns, for each SKU, each state and city, and COD vs prepaid.
- Look for patterns: one product with far more RTO than the rest, one state that refuses more parcels, or COD orders coming back much more than prepaid.
- Use at least a few weeks of orders. A product with 5 orders and 2 RTOs is not a pattern yet.
- Your returns files help here. See How to Download the Meesho Returns Report.
2. Dispatch on time, every time
- The longer a parcel takes to arrive, the more time a buyer has to change their mind or buy elsewhere.
- Pack and hand over orders on the day they come in where you can. Keep labels printed and stock ready before the courier pickup time.
- Meesho has a programme for shipping orders in less than a day. Check the Learning Hub in the Supplier Panel to see if your account can join.
- Check the Supplier Panel for how Meesho measures on-time dispatch, and plan your packing around the courier pickup time.
3. Make the listing match the product
- Buyers refuse parcels when they start to doubt the order, for example after seeing a similar product cheaper or reading a review.
- Clear photos from all sides, the real colour, a correct size chart and honest fabric or material details make the buyer more sure before the parcel arrives.
- If one SKU has a much higher RTO rate than others in the same category, check its photos, price and title first.
4. Keep an eye on COD
- Cash on delivery orders are easier to refuse, because the buyer has not paid yet.
- Check your seller panel for any COD settings available for your listings.
- What you can do is watch your COD vs prepaid RTO gap per product and state, and price and stock with that in mind.
5. Get the basics of packing and labelling right
- A wrong label, a torn label or a barcode that will not scan can delay a parcel or send it back.
- Print labels at 4×6 at actual size so the barcode scans first time. See 4×6 Thermal Printer Settings.
- Pack firmly so the parcel survives the trip. A damaged-looking parcel is easier to refuse.
- Follow each marketplace's rules for contacting buyers. Don't call or message buyers outside what the marketplace allows.
6. Check every RTO parcel when it arrives
- An RTO should come back with the same product you sent. Sometimes it comes back opened, empty or with a different product.
- Open each RTO parcel on camera in one take, with the label visible, before you put the stock back.
- If something is wrong, raise a claim within the marketplace's time limit. Flipkart's SPF FAQ says claims must be made within 14 days of receiving the returned product. For Meesho, check the claim form in the Supplier Panel for the current time limit and evidence.
- A packing video of the original parcel makes these claims much stronger. See How to Record Packing Videos for Return Claims.
7. Review once a week
- Every week, look at the top 5 SKUs and top 5 states by RTO rate.
- Change one thing at a time (photos, price, stock, dispatch time) and check again after a few weeks.
Worked example
- Suppose you shipped 600 orders last month: 120 of one kurti SKU and 480 of everything else.
- The kurti had 30 RTOs (25%). Everything else had 48 RTOs (10%).
- That one SKU is a fifth of your orders but about 38% of your RTOs (30 of 78). Fixing its photos, size chart or price is worth more than any general change.
- (These are example numbers, not averages.)
What to do next
- Returns & Cancellations in Ecommerce Tools keeps returns, RTO and cancellations in separate tabs. Paste or scan the AWBs and each one is matched to its original order.
- Seller insights shows return and RTO rates by SKU, by state and city, and for COD vs prepaid, from your own orders. Each card says what it is based on.
- Your label PDFs are read on your device and never uploaded. Order details, returns and RTO entries are saved to your account so the insights can be worked out.

Questions
What does RTO mean on Flipkart and Meesho?
Return to origin: a parcel that could not be delivered and was sent back to the seller.
Does Meesho charge for RTO?
Meesho's supplier shipping page says the seller is not charged any additional shipping fee for an RTO. Customer returns have a weight-based return shipping fee. Check Meesho's current rates, as charges can change.
Is RTO the same as a customer return?
No. A customer return was delivered and then returned. An RTO was never delivered.
What is a good RTO rate?
It depends on your category, price and how many orders are COD. Compare your own products and states with each other rather than with a national figure.
Can I claim for an RTO that came back wrong or damaged?
Yes, within the marketplace's time limit and with the evidence it asks for. A packing video and an opening video help.
