RTO vs Customer Return: What Every Seller Should Know

What they are
- RTO (return to origin): the courier couldn't deliver the parcel, or the buyer refused it, so it comes back to you undelivered.
- Customer return: the parcel was delivered, and the buyer sent it back later.
How the cost differs
Based on real payment files; marketplace fees can change, so always check your own payments.
- Amazon (Easy Ship): on an RTO, the sale and refund cancel out and the Easy Ship charge is reversed. On a customer return, the Easy Ship charge stays and a refund commission is charged.
- Flipkart: customer returns are charged a reverse shipping fee. Check the Return Type column in Settled Transactions: Customer Return or Logistics Return (RTO).
- Meesho: on an RTO, there's no return shipping charge. On a customer return, the sale is reversed and return shipping is charged.
Why tracking both matters
- Every return and RTO should reach you. If it doesn't, you may need to raise a claim.
- Claims have time limits, so check each marketplace's current claim window.
